Production crews spent hours in West Palm Beach filming scenes for a new ABC series about a photographer-turned-private-investigator, closing streets in two sectors of the city.

The crew was on site Saturday, Jan. 24 filming outside the Palm Beach County Courthouse downtown and along Pershing Way in the city’s El Cid neighborhood.

City officials said the filming was for an upcoming ABC show called RJ Decker that is scheduled to premier March 3.

The show, starring Scott Speedman, is based on a 1987 satirical novel by Florida author Carl Hiaasen about a former photographer who becomes a private eye and is hired by a sugar mogul to investigate an apparent conspiracy to fix bass-fishing competitions.

“RJ Decker is a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator in the colorful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida,” ABC Entertainment says in describing the show’s premise. “The series follows him tackling cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife and a shadowy new benefactor.”

West Palm Beach warned residents Jan. 24 that North Dixie Highway in front of the courthouse and the 200 block of Pershing Way would be closed at time throughout the day.

“Filming may stop traffic for upward of 10 minutes while cameras are rolling,” the city notice said. “As they reset and prep, officers will direct traffic.”

A video posted by the city to its YouTube channel showed a crew at work outside the courthouse and said the filming helped to create jobs for local actors and production workers.

It’s not clear to what extent West Palm Beach will feature in the series. Hiassen’s novel is set primarily in the Miami area.
