Police are carrying out searches in Londonderry following reports a suspicious device has been left in the Currynierin area of the city.

Cordons have been put in place at Elm Close and Ridgeway Drive after reports the device had been left in Tullymore Road.

It is understood residents have been advised to leave their homes while police enquiries are continuing and the local community centre has opened for anyone who needs it.

'Families should be wrapping Christmas presents'

Some, Mr O'Donnell said, have gone to the homes of family members in other parts of the city but others had opted to stay in their own home.

"There is a lot of families, a lot of elderly and vulnerable, who are feeling this," he said, adding the community centre will be available to anyone who needs it and for as long as the policing operation continues.

"A lot of families should be sitting at this particular minute in time wrapping their presents for Santa coming and this is just uncalled for.

"We do not want this and we do not need this."
