Joran Van der Sloot, the man who murdered Natalee Holloway, reportedly attempted suicide in prison on Saturday, December 13.

The convicted killer — who is currently serving his 28-year prison sentence in Peru for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramírez — was reportedly found hanging from a strip of blanket in his cell as guards were distributing breakfast to the inmates, Peruvian news outlet La Republica reported on Monday, December 15.

“The incident occurred a few days after the convicted man sent a message of apology to the victim’s family, which revived media interest in his prison situation and emotional state,” the outlet reported.

Holloway was vacationing in Aruba when she met Van der Sloot and a group of his friends. She was last seen in May 2005. Van der Sloot was the prime suspect for years, though he was never charged with a crime.

Five years after Holloway’s disappearance, Van der Sloot struck again, murdering Flores Ramírez in Lima, Peru. In June 2010, he confessed to Flores Ramirez’s murder before later trying to retract his confession, claiming intimidation by the Peruvian Police.

He was serving his 28-year prison sentence for Flores Ramirez’s murder when he was extradited to the United States on charges of extortion and wire fraud connected to Holloway’s murder.

Van der Sloot would confess to killing Holloway as part of a plea deal and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

“Joran van der Sloot is no longer the suspect in my daughter’s murder,” Holloway’s mother Beth told reporters in October 2023, following his confession. “He is the killer.”
