Norfolk’s temporary casino made over $1 million during its first month of operation.
The Interim Gaming Hall brought in more than $1.4 million in revenue in November, according to the latest revenue figures released Monday by the Virginia Lottery. The temporary casino opened Nov. 7. It is housed in a 3,600-square-foot tent-like facility and has 132 slot machines.
Also in November, Rivers Casino Portsmouth earned about $25.8 million in revenue. The number is a 5.5% decrease from October, when the casino took in around $27.3 million in revenue. The revenue data provides a first look at how the two Hampton Roads casinos will perform against one another.
Norfolk’s revenue is far less than the roughly $12 million Danville’s temporary casino earned in its first two weeks. Bristol’s temporary casino, which opened July 8, 2022, earned $11.7 million in revenue during its first month.
Those locations were the first casinos in their respective markets and both are much larger than Norfolk’s temporary facility. The Danville temporary casino was a 40,000-square-foot facility with 740 slot machines, 25 live table games and 28 electronic table games. Bristol’s temporary casino was inside Bristol Mall in a 30,000-square-foot location with 900 slot machines and 29 table games, according to Virginia Business.
The Norfolk temporary casino also generated roughly $254,000 in tax revenue in November, which includes about $85,000 going to Norfolk as a host city. Host cities receive 6% of a casino’s adjusted gaming revenue, with the percentage increasing to 7% if the establishment earns more than $200 million in yearly adjusted gross revenue and 8% if the establishment earns more than $400 million, according to state law.
Norfolk casino operators Boyd Gaming and the Pamunkey Indian Tribe are constructing a $750 million permanent facility with a 65,000-square-foot gambling hall, a 200-room hotel and a parking deck, plus several restaurants, a pool deck overlooking Harbor Park and a spa. That location is expected to open in fall 2027.
