OpenAI announced a feature to estimate users’ ages and apply age-appropriate safeguards, following parental concerns about youth safety on the platform. The update introduces ChatGPT age verification options for adults while enabling stricter defaults when the system predicts a user is under 18. The OpenAI age prediction system analyzes behavioral and consumption patterns to infer age, with a separate process for confirming identity. OpenAI says extra protections will cover graphic violence, sexual content, and harmful practices. Verification is handled by third-party vendor Persona, using a selfie or government ID, with data deleted within seven days and only birth date shared with OpenAI. Prior parental controls remain, and an adult mode is planned after safety tools mature.
