A 34-year-old Akron man was sentenced Dec. 12 to 16.5 years in a mental health facility after pleading not guilty by reason of insanity following an August 2024 attack at Cascade Valley Metro Park, Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich said in a statement.

Isaac Armour was originally charged with kidnapping, abduction and two counts of gross sexual imposition.

“After reviewing the results of clinical evaluations, the State accepted the findings of multiple medical professionals and experts that the Defendant’s severe mental disease prevented him from appreciating the wrongfulness of his actions at the time of the offense," Kolkovich's statement read. "My thoughts are with the survivor of this incident as she continues to heal. I also want to thank the bystanders who stepped in to protect the survivor and stop the attack.”

The victim described in court prior to the ruling how she is still coming to terms with the decision to commit Armour to a mental health facility.

"The use of 'not guilty' is undeniably hard for me to hear as he is most certainly guilty of something in my eyes," the victim said in a court statement obtained by Beacon Journal partner News 5 Cleveland. "But I do see its purpose. All I can do is hope this sentence will help him get the support he needs so when he is released, he will never hurt another individual again."

She noted her refusal of letting this incident take away from her family despite the challenges they have faced.

"I absolutely refuse to let this dismantle our lives, robbing them of their mom and their childhoods, my husband of his wife and me of our identity," she said. "This has bent us but has not broken us, and I'm so deeply thankful for that."

What happened at Cascade Valley Metro Park in August 2024?

Akron officers and a metro park ranger responded to a call around 9:17 a.m. Aug. 12 in the 110 block of Cuyahoga Street near Cascade Valley Metro Park trailhead for a woman screaming for help.

Upon arrival, they spoke with the 33-year-old victim who police said was visibly shaken. She told officers she was coming from the bathroom when an unknown man grabbed her from behind and began assaulting her.

Three women heard the woman scream for help and rushed to aid her, police said. During the attack, one of the women reportedly hit the suspect in the head with a rock, and they helped pull the victim away from the attacker.
